Training 101

Hey Pups,

Siberians are born with some innate behaviors such as running, pulling, wooing, and shedding to name a few. But there are certain Siberian behaviors which must be handed down from generation to generation. Kelsey Ann, Canyon and I have been working on these things with Biloxi over the last nine days. We conferenced and determined that each of us would begin with one thing we do very well. Unfortunately, there are no pictures of these things because Mom and Dad yell at him to stop and don't take time to get the camera.

Kelsey Ann decided she would teach Biloxi to drink from the toilet. Biloxi now waits for the bathroom door to be left open and dashes in there to get some of the fresh cool water. He does a very nice job of slopping toilet water all over the bathroom floor.

Canyon taught Biloxi the best food scraps are licked off of bowls, plates and silverware in the dishwasher. This one he hasn't quite mastered yet. He stole a steak knife from the dishwasher and took it to a dog bed to lick after the humans had ribeyes. Unfortunately, he ended up with a small cut on his lip before the steak knife was extracted from his mouth.

I've been working with him on opening doors. At the bottom of the stairs, there is a door into the family room. This door is usually closed, but it doesn't latch. A good, swift kick with two front paws will open the door nicely. Biloxi doesn't quite have enough weight behind him in order to do this effectively, but he did learn to hit the door at the same time I do. Two sets of dog claws will leave even more scratches all over the door.

Despite this little guy's poor start to life, he will grow up into a fine Siberian.

Kisses, Sky

How sweet of you to take Biloxi under your paw like that! Sounds like he's well along the way to becoming a proud member of HULA.

Great job passing your skills to the the young pup. Though I do have to say that I don't understand the drinking from the big white water bowl. But Brice does it. He must have learned it from the other Tervs he lived with.

I didn't know that any humans with dogs left their toilets open!

But for sure it's important to share info in a pack!

You have such a full house already. How do you ever do half of what you do? You are great folks to care so much and do so much to help. Biloxi is a lucky foster dog.

I do all those things very well, except for the door opening. I'm just not comfortable opening closed doors. One thing you might want to teach Biloxi is to bark when the lid to the toilet is closed. I do that all that time and sometimes, if mom is feeling particularly generous, she will even open it for me. Ah, the finer things in life.

You all are training him well. I especially like the trick of getting the scraps of food from the dishes in the dishwasher. That IS a GOOD one. :)

Yes, usually these traits are a result of years of proper breeding but can be taught to even Husky's with an unknown pedigree.
