Can Dogs Get the Flu?

Hey Pups,

Can dogs get the flu from their people?  I really hope not.  Mom and Dad said the Little Biped threw up at the grocery store last Saturday night.  She seemed to be OK after that; however, Monday night she woke up crying and said she was cold.  Turned out she was running a fever.  She went to Gama's Tuesday and threw up at Gama's house.  Tuesday night her fever was up to 103.4.  She went to Gama's again Wednesday.  That afternoon, Dad came home and said he didn't feel good. He got the thermometer and found out he had a fever too.  Thursday, Dad had to go to Maine for some meetings so despite not feeling well, he got out of bed at 3am and was on a plane before 6am.  He got home around 10:30pm.  Meanwhile, the Little Biped spent another day at Gama's.  Dad tried to get up for work this morning, but Mom insisted that he take a sick day.  So, the Little Biped and Dad stayed home.  The Little Biped hasn't thrown up since Tuesday, but now says she has an earache.  Tomorrow, she'll go to the doctor.  I am hoping that this can't be passed on because I really don't want to be stuck laying on the couch all day with pillows, blankets, and dirty tissues...  Wait a minute - that doesn't sound so bad!  Well, maybe we will get the flu from the people.
Brook did throw up tonight.

Oh, and Canyon just sneezed....it's going to be a long weekend...

Why, oh why?

Why, oh why, does Canyon (aka. Girly Boy) subject himself to this torture???

A New Furry Member

I would like to take the time to introduce myself. My name is Brook and I'm the newest member of the Kapp Pack. They are now 16 paws strong. I came here as a foster puppy and fit right in so this is where I will stay. I've found my furever home! I thought I'd hijack the computer for a little bit and tell you more about my stay so far.

I am a 6 month old Siberian Husky puppy and I love my new brothers and sister. Mom and Dad tell me I couldn't have arrived at a better time because soon after I arrived my big sister Meadow had a seizure. I try really hard to help mom and dad check on her. If she's laying down and I get up to go exploring I always make sure I check on her too. When we go in our crates for the day, mom and dad make sure Meadow and I are side by side. Meadow hasn't had any other seizures that we've seen but mom and dad have taken her to the VET and all of her bloodwork was great!

As you can see my big sis and I are furry close already...

I have been bestowed the title of Princess Brook and the King even let me lay on his tail...I love my big bro, Canyon! Here I am trying to be his mirror image...I look forward to meeting all the pups out there in the blogosphere!Oh, by the way, my nickname is the flying puppy. I like to jump off the ground with all fours to say hi to everyone!

Idita-Walk Take 1

Hey Pups,

Mom and Dad took us for a walk on Sunday afternoon.  The walk time was counted towards my commitment to the Idita-walk which supports Camp Bronson in Nome, AL (for the Boy Scouts). We are walking for Team Sibermal, check out the blog here. So far, we have done 90 minutes of the 1049 minute required time.  The weather has been so unseasonably warm here the last few days.  On Sunday, the temperature was over 55 degrees F.  Today, it was over 60.  Unfortunately, by the time the bipeds get home from work, have dinner, etc, we don't usually get a walk in the evening on a week day this time of year.

Last year, they bought one of those doo-hickeys that allows a biped to walk two dogs with one leash. You can see in the videos, that I got strapped to Canyon with this thing.  Dad had us boys, and Mom had Meadow.  Towards the end of the walk, I had to bite Canyon's ear to get him to shut up.  He was yapping like a sled dog in harness.  I found a youtube of some sled dogs yapping so you can compare Canyon to them.

Hope you enjoyed the videos.  Got to get back to the Westminster show on TV.  Working group is on later tonight and I'm told the Best in Breed Siberian is a good looking girl dog.

Ummm..

Hi Pups!

Well, the Super Bowl is over and our Steelers can now say they are Six-Time Super Bowl Champions. They are the only team in the history of the Super Bowl that can claim that honor. It was a great game and the Cardinals really gave it all they had...

The last three minutes of the game were a real nail-biter....

I think mom stopped breathing during the last few minutes, but with a last minute pass to Santonio Holmes the Steelers made their way to victory. We are still in awe of their accomplishment!

Now on to NASCAR and baseball...

Snow!

Hi Puppers!

I'm a bit late sharing our fun in the snow. Mom had the week off of work and spent the week playing with us and the little biped. So she didn't have much time to help me write a blog post.

Here's Sky watching Canyon and I play.....it was more like watching me jumping on Canyon though....he's such a wimp!
Sky and I watching Canyon wait at the door.....he needs some more fur

Canyon waiting to pounce on Sky!

Can you tell Canyon thinks he's freezing to death?

I saved the best for last! How do woo like my snow nose???

The forecast is for 3-6 inches of snow on Tuesday night. I can't wait! Hopefully it will be enough for the little biped to get out on the sled with King Skyboy!

Snowy Sunday

Hi Puppers,
I thought I would share some pics of our first snowfall of 2009. We had lots of fun running and playing in the snow last night,
Me: Canyon, how do you like the snow?
Canyon: It's a little cold for my taste...

Me: Is there more snow coming?

I wonder if the neighbors got more snow than us...

This was King Skyboy showing off and striking a royal pose in the snow...
I hope we get more snow soon. Mom wasn't able to let Sky pull the little biped sled because we didn't get enough snow. It supposed to get "arctic" cold this week, maybe that will bring more white, fluffy, fun stuff!

Snowy Saturday!

Here's the view from our back window and front window today. We were about paw deep in snow this morning and we thought that's all we were going to get, but it started up again at about 2:30 PM this afternoon. Maybe we'll all get to go out and play in the snow with the little biped this evening.

New Year's Studmuffin

Hey Pups,

It's that time of month again... Hussy Wednesday. Princess Meadow wouldn't cooperate, so Duke Canyon was kind enough to provide Mom with a Studmuffin shot.

In honor of Hussy Wednesday, I, King Skyboy have decided another Knight must be named. Steve will forever be known as Sir Steve of the Washington Woos. His contribution to canine society is his way of having his humans bow to his every whim. Recently he submitted a picture to me that showed how his dad stayed on the couch just so Sir Steve could continue using him as a pillow. Great work!

Since Khyra is his girlfriend, she is now known as Lady Khyra the Wise of Pawsylvania. Khyra also has the distinct honor of being the greatest hussy I know.

Welcome to my Royal Court, Sir Steve and Lady Khyra.

King Skyboy's Royal Court

Hey Pups,

As I mentioned the other day, Dad has discovered that we are descended from several royal families including the all of the Welsh Kings of Powys (reigned: c 400 to 1160); High King of Ireland, Brian Boru (reigned: 1002 - 1014); King Pepin I of Italy (reigned: 781-810); Charlemagne of France (reigned 768-814); Holy Roman Emperor Constantine (reigned: 306-337); Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (reigned: 161 to 180); Roman Emperor Trajan (reigned 98-117); as well as several other Irish, German, French, Welsh, English, Italian and Roman heads of state, nobels, bishops, and saints.

Therefore, I have proclaimed myself: King Skyboy, His Majesty of Siberians. Additionally, I announce King Skyboy's Royal Court.

I recognize
Queen Meeshka, Her Majesty of Merryland and invite Queen Meeshka to share the throne in the Kingdom of Siberians as Queen Meeshka, Her Majesty of Siberians.

I recognize my sister, Princess Meadow, Her Majesty of Siberians.

I bestow upon my brother, Canyon, a Dukedom; forever more he will be known as Duke Canyon of Pennsylvania.

I bestow upon my brother, Biloxi, a Dukedom; forever more he will be known as Duke Biloxi of Mississippi.

I bestow the title of Knight Grand Husky (most senior of Knight ranks) to
Echo; forever to be known as Sir Echo, Esquire, Foremost Legal Advisor to the King. Sir Echo receives this title for several reasons: his full name is Merlin's Echo, and Merlin was an advisor to a Welsh King, King Arthur; and, he has for some time now acted as legal counsel to dogs pro bono.

I bestow Knighthood to
Jack of New England; forever to be known as Sir Jack of Coastal New England. Sir Jack receives this title for having made the suggestion of King Skyboy's Royal Court.

Over the course of my reign, I expect to bestow titles upon others for contributions to canine society deemed worthy of honor as determined by me (with advice, when requested, from those who are titled).

Those who have been earned title, may email me at
kapppack@gmail.com in order to receive this picture for their blog so others will know they belong to my Royal Court.

More Whining....

Hey Pups!

This have been really awful around here lately. Mom's been sick for a few days which meant all she did was sleep and not give us extra attention. I rained most of Friday and Saturday and we even had a tornado watch yesterday. Dad's leaving again for another business trip tomorrow. The exterminator is coming tomorrow morning to "take care of the ants."

Worst of all, I am not being treating fairly in MY KINGDOM! The first evidence I have of this is the following picture...Can you believe all this princess junk in MY food dish???? And the biped left it there all day! I mean, did the little biped think my food dish made a good throne for Cinderella???
The next situation is the one I find extremely disturbing. Canyon and Meadow got into a fight yet again over something stupid. To not go into tomany details, Mom figured out what caused it again and the humans are working to help Canyon and Meadow to behave better. Mom told me I'm the good one and I don't need to learn anything else. Well, one of the new routines is that Canyon and Meadow have to be in a "down" at food time or in their crates. We were practicing the down, stay which Canyon and I know, but Meadow still needs to learn this. I kept getting distracted by the TV and other thoughts...Khyra, Holly, Storms, Ammy, Eva, Meeshka, Frankie Girl...and all of a sudden I heard dad say "put Sky in his crate if he's not going to listen"
WHAT?????? Are you kidding me??? Me, the King of Huskies, does NOT get crated. This is an abomination! I haven't been crated since I was a puppy. I've earned my place out of the crate by being trustworthy in the house. I made it difficult for mom to get me in there by dragging my feet. She had to slide me across the floor. I wasn't going in without a fight. They gave me some crap about making an example out of me. What? An example of torture???I was secrectly plotting my escape. I was thinking that pin could have been slid out with my tongue...Then I just laid down and gave mom my best cranky face. You know what she did??? She laughed at me. Apparently there was something funny in the fact that I laid diagonal across the crate and put my tail up in the air in the corner. She even called dad over so he could laugh at me too. She tried to cover it up by saying she was laughing because I was cute. Yeah, right, whatever Mom!

I am so NOT amused with this situation. I have awards to accept, but quite frankly I am just not in the mood to do that tonight!

Attack of the Killer Ants

Canyon here...

It seems we have some invaders in our house. Mom noticed them the other day and thought dad had taken care of them...

Mom hates bugs like this.....they aren't nice and cute like ladybugs and butterflies...

Mom is having irrational fears of these ants invading our house and taking over...

So what did they get at the grocery store??? You guessed it....ant traps!

So one of the rooms of our basement is off limits to us now thanks to Kelsey Ann. Way back, when Mom and Dad lived in their rental townhouse they had some ants get into the house and put out ant traps to catch them. The problem came when Kelsey decided to try to eat the ant traps. Mom freaked and thought she was poisoned. She called the vet and he said it should be ok but if they wanted they could give her Ipecac syrup to make her throw up. So out mom went at 10PM to get the yucky stuff to make her horka. Mom got home, forced the yucky stuff on KA, and they waited. They made her stand outside so she wouldn't horka in the house. They got sick of waiting for her out there so they put her down in her crate. (want the real gruesome story of why she got sent back inside???? Cover your eyes if you have a weak stomach. She tried to eat a nest of baby bunnies while they left her outside to horka!) Then she horkaed. Mom and Dad thouht she was done so let her go up to bed....she horkaed in her bed then too. Mom and Dad had lots of stuff to clean up. KA definitely earned her HULA membership many times over.

So Mom and Dad tell me because they don't want a repeat of the whole Kelsey Ann and the ant trap incident that we are not allowed in that room until all of the ants are sent to their untimely death!

I'm Okay

Hi Puppers!

Mom and Dad decided I didn't have to go to the V-E-T after all. They've been checking on my leg and I've been really good about leaving it alone so they decided to wait and keep an eye on it. Thanks for all of your concern. Honestly I don't know what Canyon's problem was!

Today when the little biped had her cheese curls I had to go to my crate! What's up with that! I didn't start the fight!

Exciting Matchups

Gov. Palin vs. Sen. Biden, Chicago Cubs vs. LA Dodgers... What to watch??? The debate is on and the Cubs are going to try and win one in Wrigley in about 20 minutes. What a decision to make. Oh yeah, we have picture-in-picture. The Phillies and Brewers game just ended and Dad's got TBS on in the corner with the debate live on FOX.
Mom recently got software to edit pictures and she thought we could do some work to try and reverse the curse. Since we weren't able to get to Chicago for the NLDS games (maybe the Cubs will play in Philadelphia, who now lead Milwaukee 2-0, during the NLCS) and they probably wouldn't have let us in anyway, we are there in spirit.
Here's Meadow and I with Dad and the Little Biped "sitting" in the stands at Wrigley.

Here's Sky "with" Dad and the Little Biped when they visited Wrigley this summer.

Well let's hope that some huskies at Wrigley can reverse the curse started 63 years ago by Murphy the Goat. In the words of Harry Caray: "Let's get some runs!!!"

Enjoy the video (at the time, the Cubs were in the NL East - they're now in the NL Central).
