Pumpkin Portrait

EXTRA! EXTRA! Husky Alert - Winter is Almost Here!!

The bipeds have a ritual that helps start winter. It involves cutting holes on large orange spheres. Then they put a candle in it and set it outside at night. The candle makes the picture that the holes created show up in the dark. On a night shortly after that, they dress the Little Biped in funny clothes and take her to get candy from the neighbors. Before we had the Little Biped, we would give out the candy. Within a few weeks after all this, winter starts. The ritual began last night. Here's some pictures of it.

This one's a portrait of me that they did because I'm so special.

Good Night, Sleep Tight

Hello everydoggy,

In honor of last night's full moon, we thought we'd share our bedtime ritual with you. Even Hennessy joined us.

First, we get our bedtime stories with the Little Biped. The little biped has really good taste when it comes to books. The books on this particular night were about zoo and farm animals. Next, she says prayers. She always makes sure to include us in her "God blesses." She even started including Hennessy. Then, she goes to bed. Next, we get to go outside.

Then, we get our food. Once we're well fed, we dictate our blog posts and visit all of our blogging doggy friends to read their posts and leave comments. After that, we watch some TV; then, we're ready for bed.

So, I guess it's off to watch Animal Planet.

Woo woo, Kelsey Ann

P.S. I am sad. My friend, Hennessy, went home with his Mom and Dad Thursday night. I had gotten a 10-day reprieve from the Annoying One jumping on me when I come up the stairs. That's all over now. Nighty-night. Oh, and don't let the fleas bite......ha roo roo roo!

The "Mouse" Hunter

Steve Irwin once said: "born a wildlife warrior, die a wildlife warrior." That pretty much describes me last night. I am so proud of myself! Mom and Dad were pretty proud too. They gave me a whole can of wet food (Wellness 95% salmon) all for myself while all the other doggies sat and vultured.

Yesterday, the whole family was hanging out together in the basement family room. Mom, Dad, the Little Biped, Queen Kelsey, Sky, Hennessy and myself were all together. I was snuggled up with the Little Biped watching Open Season. It's a movie about hunting (but the animals win and the hunters lose). Dad had used the DVR to tape it since we had free movie channels on the TV for the weekend. I was watching very carefully to learn about hunting. Being that I am half husky and half lab, my hunting skills are usually all confused. I don't know if I should chase live animals like a husky or bring back dead ones like a lab... I thought if I watched this movie with the Little Biped, I might be able to hone my hunting skills.

After we watched for a little while, we were sent outside for our normal business. When we came back in, I smelled something funny and heard an odd noise. I figured it was time to try out the hunting skills I had learned in the movie, and see if I could catch the animal making the noise. I went behind the couch and started sniffing around at the baseboard heater. Then the animal squeaked. Mom yelled: "A MOUSE IN THE HOUSE!!!" She grabbed the Little Biped and instructed Dad that he needed to catch it. I stayed with him to work on it. We spent several hours trying to get it. When it would come out from under the heater, it would quickly run to another heater and hide under there. A few times, it found its way into the walls. Dad had all the tools that he needed: a few mouse traps, a screwdriver to try to chase it out from under the heater, a plastic bag to catch it in, and a hammer... Several times, we would go upstairs and leave it alone in the hopes it would come out.

Dad and I had gone downstairs to try and catch it again - well, that's what I thought anyway. Dad was taking laundry out of the dryer, but I was looking. I found it and got it cornered. I started to bark to get Dad's attention and he said "Good boy, Canyon!" I had the mouse trapped. It was hiding between a wall and an open door, but I wasn't going to let it get away again. Dad closed the door with me in the office and him in the laundry room. He told me it wasn't a mouse, it was a shrew. We have problems with these things. They fall down the stairs from our yard when it rains heavily. They must be trying to escape drowning in the yard. The shrew hid under the door, but I chased it out and then Dad got the little mole-like animal. He finished it off in a fashion similar to the old carnival game (you know the one), if not.....here's a BIG hint
We went upstairs and Mom told me what a good boy I was. That's when she got the can of food out and gave the whole thing to me! It doesn't get much better than that! Victorious in my hunting and a special treat!

Road Trip!

Hey Dogs!

Today my mom, dad and little biped got to go on a road trip. I still don't understand why they didn't take me along, but whatever....I got to stay home and rest. Canyon even got to stay out of his crate while they were gone. What fun......all 4 of us free to roam the house.

But enough about us, the road trip was to transport a 1 year old Siberian Husky from an overcrowded shelter to a loving foster home. Two MaPaw volunteers sprung her from the shelter and then met up with my humans who transported her to her new foster dad. Mom and Dad reported Sasha (transport dog's name) was a pleasure to meet. She rode well in the car and gave lots and lots of kisses and hugs to all of them. She loved our little biped (mom and dad were very cautious about this interaction) and she just seemed very happy to be out of the shelter.
Mom was telling me Sasha's story. She had been adopted months ago from the same shelter we rescued her from today. Her "family" took her back to the shelter because they couldn't handle her high energy level. So I say this as a reminder to anyone thinking about getting a dog....PLEASE RESEARCH THE BREED BEFORE YOU DECIDE ON THE ONE YOU WANT.....JUST BECAUSE WE ARE "PRETTY" DOESN'T MEAN WE ARE FOR EVERYONE!!!!

Ok, sorry for yelling, but I feel better know. In my first year and a half of life I was in and out of our local humane society shelter because the people who "owned" me didn't understand husky tendencies. Thanks to MaPaw Siberian Husky Rescue, Sasha will find a responsible, siberian-friendly furever home just like I did!!!!!

Kisses, Sky
(Wishing I would have gotten to meet her....she is VERY pretty)

Is Canyon Allergic????

Hello Everydoggy!
Ok, I know I complain A LOT about the "annoying one", but I think he may be having a problem with our houseguest. Mom says Canyon is reverse sneezing.....Dad had no idea what she was talking about so she looked it up on the internet and sure enough there is such a thing. Mom didn't make it up. Canyon has been doing this choking/cough/sneezing/sucking air in like it's his last breath. I do actually feel bad for him. He gets really scared when it happens and goes to mom right away for her to make him feel better. He's such a momma's boy. Mom read there are two ways to help him when it happens: cover his nose so he takes in air through his mouth or massage his throat since that tightens up too when it happens.
The reason for this sudden condition???? I believe it might be the new "houseguest", don't worry we won''t put Hennessy out on the street, but this only started happening to Canyon when Hennessy got here. If this condition persists after Hennessy leaves, mom and dad will take him to see our Dr. Horst to make sure there are no more serious medical things happening.

I couldn't resist sharing this pic of Canyon and his little biped....this was before the Minnie Mouse incident!

Hennessy Says "I Love You"

Hello Everydoggy!

I clawed Mom into taking some video of Hennessy tonight. Notice how we all look annoyed with the "speaking". We're not used to loud doggies, but Hennessy likes to talk every once in a while. Things are going OK with him, Mom and Dad finally got him to eat tonight. Dad got out some of our good, wet food and split a can between the four of us so Hennessy would eat his dinner. The only problems we've had with Hennessy is that he doesn't realize it's not OK to lay on the upstairs couch.....we all know the rules but they're being lenient with him because he's a temporary house guest. I have pictures of all of us sleeping in our spots the other night. I'll share those tomorrow. I have to go now to get some snuggle time in with Dad. He's leaving early tomorrow morning for a one night business trip to Wisconsin.

Oh, I almost forgot, check out this humiliating picture of Canyon. This is the little biped's idea of fun and mom's entry for us into the MaPaw Howl-O-Ween Photo Contest.

Our first playdate!

Hey Doggies!

I'm so excited to tell you Canyon and I had our very first doggy playdate today. We met up with A LOT of doggies at Dogtown outside of Philadelphia. They have a very nice indoor play area with artificial turf and they even have a fire hydrant to pee on! I got to meet lots of blogging huskies today. Sasha and Isis and Magnum and Blue (and their newfie sister, Ananya) and about 9 other doggies, including MaPaw foster brothers Rocky and Buck (who are still looking for their furever home).

Canyon and I hope you enjoy our little slide show of our playdate.

Canyon was a little shy at first, but Pa (from MaPaw) was there and helped him to come out of his shell, although he always made sure he knew where mom and dad were in case he got scared. Kelsey wasn't too upset since she got to stay home and catch up with her old friend, Hennessy. If you remember, about 2 weeks ago Hennessy came for a trial visit and this morning he came to stay for about 10 days while his mom and "new" dad go on their honeymoon to Europe. We are doing our best to make Hennessy feel at home. We even tried to teach him some husky play out in the yard this afternoon. We will tell you more about Hennessy tomorrow.

Husky GPS

Hey Pups!

Mom came home and told me she was doing some reading at work today in National Geographic Kids and she came upon a picture of a beautiful red and white husky, just like our Queen, Kelsey Ann. The small article was about a new tracking device for dogs called RoamEO. Mom thought this would have been a nice device to use for me when I was a young and stupid husky. Now of course, as you've all learned, I'm the best dog in the world!
RoamEO is a collar that has a GPS tracking device in it and then your humans use this handheld device. Humans can program in parameters for your yard and if your dog goes outside of those borders an alarm will sound on the GPS unit. I suppose this could also be used for tracking wayward huskies, so long as they are wearing the collar. It's pretty expensive but Mom thought it might help somehusky out there if their humans learned about this!
Kisses, Sky boy
(I heard rumors that Canyon and I might get to go to our very first dog park on Sunday!!!)

Cooler Weather

Someone once said in a song that old men sit and talk about the weather and old women sit and talk about old men, but in this case I believe that an old dog will be talking about the weather rather than some old men.

I heard the weather man say two weeks ago that autumn had begun. I knew this mean that the weather should be getting cooler and before long it would be winter which only means one thing to a husky... SNOW!!!!!! The weather had started to get cooler, but then it suddenly turned warmer again. My Dad said that its called Indian Summer. But, I did my own research and found out that Dad is wrong. It couldn't have been Indian Summer yet, because we haven't had a frost. None the less, I am hoping that the cooler weather is here to stay and that it will soon be winter. I am ready for snow after a long hot summer.

Interview by Lola

Recently, we told Ferndoggle we would like to be interviewed. Lola chose to interview Sky because she thinks he is very handsome. Here's her questions and his responses.1. You are just like Frank Sinatra with those big blue eyes. Do you have a hard time fighting off the ladies? What is your favorite Frank Sinatra song?

The ladies I have the most contact with are Kelsey, Mom and the little biped. Kelsey mostly stays to herself on her throne so I really don't have an issue there. The only time I try to fight off attention from Mom is when she comes after me with the evil torture device, the Furminator. As for the little biped, she likes to sit on me, pull my tail, pull my ears and provide other general torture; Mom and Dad have been making her sit in a lot of timeouts lately so that she learns that it is a bad choice to pick on us doggies. She's been getting better at it and life is getting easier. When I do get to go out to meet and greets with MaPaw, I'm happy to get attention from everyone, so I don't fight off attention then either.
My favorite Frank Sinatra song is
Mama Will Bark.

2. I noticed you have a habit of licking metal stuff. Does the metal at your house taste like chicken?

No, it tastes like metal. Don't tell the humans, but I do it just to keep them guessing.

3. We know Kelsey thinks Canyon is the "Annoying One", but how do you like your little brother?

I don't have a problem with him; Kelsey finds him to be annoying because he jumps all over her when we are coming up the steps, going down the steps, going out, coming in, waking up, going to bed, and pretty much all the time. He just wants to play. So, when he comes after me, I "play." Canyon gets knocked down and I grab him by the scruff of the neck. Most evenings we do this over and over again. I actually find it to be fun. She thinks that she's above playing; so she comes out and thinks she's the referee and that's the end of our play. She gets annoyed when he tries to play without first asking properly. She expects him to approach her like a loyal subject would to a "queen" (i.e. in a play bow) and grovel for permission to play. I suppose that Canyon and I are more of the pack mentality than Kelsey is. We know that puppies learn to hunt by playing with the alpha. Don't get me wrong - Kelsey doesn't disagree with the pack mentality; she disagrees with Canyon acting like a puppy when he's grown larger than her.

4. Living in Central PA, do you find a conflict choosing the Steelers over the Eagles? I personally don't see a real conflict because the Eagles are stinky and the Steelers are PAWSOME, but which team do you prefer? There's a second football team in Pennsylvania? I've never heard of these Eagles that you speak of. Who are they? Maybe they're one of those pretend football teams (the ones that play on the little field that's indoors) like the one that the 80's hair band rock star owns (if you don't know who I'm talking about here's a few clues - his band is named for him, he's from New Jersey, one of his albums was named after a street sign, and now he thinks he's a country singer)... If they are a real football team, I only have one other question about them. Figure out the answer to this question and you'll know who the better team is. The Steelers have won 5 Super Bowls. How many have the Eagles won?

5. I don't really know any Huskies, pawsonally. Could you tell me a little bit about your breed? What kind of challenges does a new Husky owner face?
I'm glad that you asked about this, Lola. Our breed characteristics can be challenges in and of themselves.

Challenge #1 - training: Huskies are very independent. We don't like to follow instructions, but we can be trained. Kelsey was trained with a choke collar; I was trained with a shock collar; Canyon was simpler to train because he's part lab. Even after we've been trained we still tend to ignore commands that we don't want to follow at that moment.

Challenge #2 - containment: We were bred by the ancients to run and pull sleds. Because of this, we don't know what a territory is and will run if we are left out without some kind of containment system. For some huskies, even sub-terrain radio fences won't even do the job. We must be taken out on leashes, placed in a secure dog run, or fenced in a secure area at all times.

Challenge #3 - pack-oriented: Many huskies have a separation anxiety due to our strong sense of pack orientation. Huskies with this problem can be very destructive to human property when left alone. This a lot of times can be easily solved by having more than one of us.

Challenge #4 - energy: This relates to our breeding just like the containment issue. We were bred to run as I stated above. Due to this we have a lot of energy that we need to use. One of the foster dogs, Dobbs, that we took care of (pre-Canyon) used to do laps around the top of the sectional couch after being in his crate all day.

Challenge #5 - medical issues: Many huskies are prone to eye issues and allergies. The good news is that its all easily treatable when diagnosed early.

Challenge #6 - prey drive: Huskies are very closely related to wolves. We are very good at killing small animals which find their way into our fences or homes. This includes rabbits, possums, birds and cats.

Challenge #7 - fur: We have two coats. We shed. A LOT. 'Nuf said.
Although this seems like a lot to be concerned about, we are excellent dogs to have as companions to humans if the humans understand our energy level and the need to protect ourselves from our instinct to run. We love to be near our humans; we love little biped humans and are very tolerant of them; we love to keep our humans healthy by taking them for walks; if you're hungry, we'll bring you some freshly killed rabbit; we've got beautiful eyes and coats; with proper training and lots of patience, we'll listen pretty well; for a large breed, we live long lives; and best of all, we're don't make a lot of noise dogs(well, at least some of us don't, Kelsey can woo woo with the best of them!).

Now it's my turn to interview somedoggy! Here are the rules if you want me to interview you:

1. If you are interested in being interviewed, leave me a comment saying, 'interview me.'
2. I will respond by posting five questions for you. I get to pick the questions.
3. You will update your blog with a post containing your answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

Kisses, Sky.

Comfiness Restored

Hello Everydoggy!

I finally got all of my thrones back, but I have not been able to get mom to take pictures of me in all of them yet. Mom has been feeling sick and my clawing her is not working to get on the photography job. I guess I should be happy she is still feeding us and letting us out. Mom is upset about being sick because she is Matron-of-Honor in one of her best friend's weddings this weekend (remember Hennessy?????It's his mom and new dad's wedding). Sorry for the short post. I will update everydoggy with more later on.....if I can claw mom off of the couch!Oh, there's one positive in all of this, I've hit the used kleenex jackpot!!!!!

Payback!

This is what Mom found last night when it was time to go to bed. Dad's on another business trip, Michigan this time. For some reason Mom didn't think I should be laying in her spot. Canyon slept in Dad's spot all night.....life just isn't fair! (Note from Mom: Kelsey has never "slept" on the bed, she will snuggle and then she's done and wants to get down. She prefers the closet or her bed...ummm...I mean throne)

Hey, Dave, GDFTCB, What do you think of Mom's quilt????

Ok, I'm back.....I heard the washing machine start running right after Mom let us out today. Maybe that was our beds.......I'll be waiting!!!

What's Going On Here?????

Hello Everydoggy, Something is definitely amiss in our house.

This is me looking very happy on one of my thrones on Saturday.

This is me today!!!!!!!
Even Sky is miserable!

Do you see what's missing? Yes, exactly, my throne and all five thrones have gone missing! Some of them are Sky and Canyon's beds.....but as Queen I reserve the right to "borrow" them whenever I like.
The annoying one seems to be the only one not bothered by the situation.
This is what has become of our beds. Mom says they needed a good cleaning and she was on a cleaning spree yesterday, so this is what we are left with. She still has not put the throne covers in the washing machine. She says she has to wait until all of the biped laundry is finished. I think I am going to claw her until she returns the covers and puts my thrones back in order. I will keep you posted on the situation.

Until then I am giving mom the cold shoulder....

Oh, and it gets even better yet, Mom made a cake yesterday for our Paw-Paw's birthday (Mom's step dad). He grew up on a farm in Minnesota and loves tractors. They were supposed to eat it tonight but their flight back from Texas got delayed and they will have to come over tomorrow for cake. We are trying to figure out how to get the cake from off the top of the stove, but not have succeeded yet! Wish me luck!!!! Hey, Echo, Cake Alert!!!!!!

Oh, I almost forgot, our friend, Bama, tagged us to share what our theme songs would be. This was a really hard task but we think we came up with some good ones.

Kelsey Ann- "Respect" by Aretha Franklin or "Dancing Queen" by ABBA
Sky- "Run Away" by Bon Jovi
Canyon- "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith (that's the lab part of him coming out) and "Ain't Too proud to Beg" by the Temptations

We tag anydoggy who would like to share their theme song!
