Not only a gift but a life too!

Hello Everydoggy! Our mom got this on one of her email lists and wanted to share with everyone as a holiday reminder......BIPED TISSUE ALERT!

A DOG IS FOR LIFE - NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS!

Twas the nite before Xmas when all thru the house
Not a creature was stirring not even a mouse
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that St. Nick soon would be there.

The children all nestled all snug in their beds
With No thought of the dog filling their head
And mamma in her kerchief and I in my cap
Knew the dog was cold, but didn't care about that.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter
Away to the window I flew like a flash
Figuring the dog was free of his chain and into the trash.
The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow
Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
But Santa Clause with eyes full of tears

He unchained the dog once so lively and quick
Last years Xmas present now painfully sick
More rapid than eagles he called the dogs name
And the dog ran to him despite all his pain.

Now Dasher, now Dancer, now Prancer and Vixen
On Comet on Cupid on Donner and Blitzen
To the top of the porch to the top of the wall
Let's find this dog a home where he will be loved by all.
I knew in an instant there would be no gifts this year
For Santa had made one thing quite clear
The gift of a dog is not just for the season
We had gotten the dog for all the wrong reasons.
In our haste to think of the kids a gift
There was one important thing we missed
A dog should be family, and cared for the same
You don't give a Gift, then put it on a chain.
And I heard him explain as he rode out of site
YOU WEREN'T GIVEN A GIFT YOU WERE GIVEN A LIFE!

We just don't understand how people can treat livng creatures like that.
We had a pup friend that appeared to have a good life until its people had a baby. It was all donwhill from there. While her physical needs were met, her emotional and pyschological weren't. It makes us aware of how lucky we are - a warm house in the winter, a cool house in the summer(Momma dislikes A/C but runs it for us), good food, good medical care and most of all, a very loving family that rearranges their lives for us. Well, except for addressing Eva's desire to herd sheep.

Momma and Dad thought about getting involved in rescue, but knew they'd fail but Momma is thinking one more would be good. So what if they are only "allowed" by the city to have two dogs.

That Santa Paws is a good guy! Thanks for sharing that. We only wish he could take all the unhappy pups back to the North Pole with him.

I wouldn't let mistress read that. Anything with a tissue alert means A WHOLE ROLL of kitchen towel (more absorbant) will be gone.

I am sure it was a good story though.

That is a great poem and so true that is why we got Louie. He was adopted by another family but when they found out he was deaf they brought him back. Now what type of person can ever do that. Certainly they did not deserve him in the first place!!!
Great blog....Louie and Gus

Hey Kapp Pack,

That poem should be in every newspaper and magazine and on TV and the radio to make people think about what they are doing before they bring a dog home!!!

Excellent reminder...Xmas is not the time to add a new addition to the family.

Here's a secret...our Mom is actually a big fat hypocrite. Mom bought me as a Xmas gift 2 years ago...for herself! But she is an exceptionally responible human and would NEVER, EVER recommend anyone get a new puppy or dog or kitten or turtle around the holidays.

Oh & we got your card this weekend! You guys all look great...but Sky is simply stunning!!

Excellent poem. When 101 Dalmations came out one X-mas, there was a run on people buying Dalmations fur their kids. So many Dalmations ended up into rescues cuz like us Sibes - Dalmations are not fur every family, too. It's great to give a gift of a doggie, but it is not just a gift but a life you are responsible fur. Sorry fur the soapbox comment!

This sometimes sadly happens. Puppies make cute gifts but one should realize it is a commitment, not just a seasonal plaything.

Woooo, thanks for the tissue alert, mama's flowing.
She found the way around the puppy gift though. Chili was a gift for our BoogieBoy, but lives with us cause Boogies stupid human dad isn't responsible enough to take proper care of a child, let alone a HUSKY. So...the responsible thing to do is give the pup, then keep it at YOUR house!
Ok, maybe not, but it works for us since normally Boogie is here more than he's at home.
Manykisses,

We skipped over that post because mom knew with the first line she had read it before and it would make her cry. We wanted to say hi and we got your card. It was lovely.

We loved that poem. It is so sad how some poor pups spend their lives. We have never understood why some one would get a doggy if they didn't mean for it to be a member of their family!
Thanks for the lovely Christmas card!

Thats so true. Mummy says I'm not a dog, I'm a member of this family and should be treated the same as all the other family members.

It is probably best to wait until after the holidays if you want to make an addition to the family. A better present would be a dog training book or a collar and leash for plenty of walks.
